It's All in the Details

 

 

 

Carolina Herrera Baez's apartment is nothing short of fabulous, but one of the most interesting details in her home is this ribbon and nailhead trim.  This would be a pretty easy DIY (the worst part would be the time commitment) and could really add a wow factor to a room.  I would do this in a small space that doesn't have much furniture so that you could see the detail above the baseboards.  I would also choose a space that isn't high traffic and maybe do a darker colored ribbon so that dirt wouldn't show.  Another factor in warding off the dirt might be the height of the baseboards.  Notice that hers look to be at least six inches high.  Not sure if I have an appropriate place in my home for this treatment, but am filing it away for future reference!

Time for another Best of the Blogosphere round up!

#1 - Board and Batten Hallway (Young House Love)

 

The DIY instructions for this wore me out (they were very detailed which is great if you want to try this yourself, there was a time when I would have done that but with two kids there is no way it would happen now) but the results are fantastic.  Makes me want to add some Board and Batten in my mud room.  The project was completed for only $57, but note that they already had tools and things like caulk and spackle on hand.





 

 

 

 

#2 - The Point (Elements of Style)

 

I want to go here too.  Do you sense a theme of getaway/escape?  (see last week's post).  I think it's just the winter blues.

 

 

 

 

 

#3 - Patio Makeover (Bryn Alexandra)

 

This post isn't necessarily exciting, its the promise of seeing the finished product that's exciting.  My patio needs a makeover too, so maybe she'll give me some good inspiration.  I'm so ready for the cold weather to be over so we can enjoy the outdoors again!

To the Walls

 

This image is from Elle Decor and has been floating around the internet for a while, but its definitely worthy of another look.

The trick here?  Red frames!  What a great way to add some color and interest to an otherwise bland hallway.  Notice that all the frames match, but are different sizes and are hung a bit haphazardly for a more casual feel.  The red frames are paired with black and white photographs, which keeps the composition from becoming overwhelming (color photos and colored frames might feel a bit chaotic).  This idea could be re-created with any paint color and in any space!

It's All in the Details

 

I love to browse catalogs for great decorating ideas. 

This photo in Pottery Barn's latest issue caught my eye:

 

I love how they mixed the farm table with their version of the iconic Navy chairs.  This kitchen has a sort of rustic/industrial vibe but still feels very modern.

 

But what got my attention was the cabinetry in the upper left corner of the photo.

 

 

Notice how the cabinet is painted white but the doors are trimmed out with black paint.  This small contrasting paint detail really calls attention to the cabinets and the items displayed inside. 

 

This would be an easy, inexpensive way to freshen up some existing cabinetry.

 



Best of the Blogosphere

After several weeks of sickness, I am hopefully (keep your fingers crossed and say a few prayers) back to the blog.

 

While I have not actually been blogging, I have been thinking about blogging and that has been pretty productive.

#1 - Jenny Komenda's Bathroom Re-Do (Little Green Notebook)

 

Jenny is the ABSOLUTE QUEEN of DIY and I do not know why she doesn't have her own show on HGTV because she would be fabulous on it. Her DIY's don't look DIY at all, they look amazing. She repainted some fugly laminate in her bathroom and it is killer!

Sheer genius - addressing things that we can't easily change in our homes and making a positive out of a negative.  This week features ideas on how to update oak kitchen cabinets.  Great ideas abound:

This is exciting because I can't wait to see all the wonderful things she will do to it!  This is one of her design boards for a client, so beautiful!
